We live in an information age. Even twenty years ago we weren't connected the same way. Now with Social Media and live video streaming, it would be odd in a 1st world culture to claim ignorance about something everyone else seems to know about. The issue we all face is 'How do I know if it is true?' If you read or hear something about your neighbor, you can go next door and find out by simply asking. However, if it is hundreds of miles, maybe thousands, then we rely on another source that we cannot verify. Our natural instinct is to trust in something we want to believe. Listen to the conversations of others (especially your own) and honestly notice how many references are used in the form of 'they say'. Who are 'they' anyway? When someone uses the cliché to support their story, are they not still trying to convince themselves?
Moving back into the digital now, 'they sayers' have sourced the net and social media to find supporting information in order to gather validity to their claim. "I have the data to prove it!" Do you? How can you verify the source you are referring to? Or even the source of your source! To be a crowd pleaser or a crowd follower sacrifices your individuality for someone else's cause. When we align ourselves with someone or something that we believe is without error then we run the risk of robbing ourselves of the opportunity to see if it really is. Sounds skeptical? If you feel that something is necessary to know, perhaps it does. But if you elect to tell yourself 'I really don't need to know that', then you remain unstained by the spin of others and their hidden motives. In that state we are more likely to enjoy the truth of the matter, if indeed there even is one. Subsequently, there appears to be more fiction in non fiction than their wielders would care to admit.
A final note here. I am not proposing that everything claiming the status of truth to be a ruse. I do imply that there might be more truth in fiction than you might realize. Perhaps our imaginations are less gilded by the subterfuge of others than the knowledge we wish to obtain to prove ourselves right!
